White fear and bad economics are killing the middle class

A new report by the Pew Research Center shows that the American middle class is slowly eroding.

The study shows that “the American middle class is now matched in number by those in the economic tiers above and below it.”

That’s not good.

Basically there are more rich and poor people combined than “middle-income households” in the United States.

...or something like that.

…or something like that.

Pew’s survey found that money moved from “middle-income to upper-income households,” which may be viewed as good economic news. But it also shows that the combined household incomes for middle-class Americans has dived from 62% in 1970 to just 43% in 2014.

Again–that’s not good.

It kind of gets better, and worse, for minorities. Black people have made economic gains but are still more likely to be poor and “less likely to be upper income than whites or adults overall.”

Rising tide lifts all boats, right?

But what sticks out for me is how a study of this nature taps into the faux fear that white people are losing ground financially and in everything else.

It’s a nauseating show of white privilege and here’s why: Donald Trump is leading the field of candidates for the Republican presidential nomination.

He’s found the sweet spot of American politics and he continues to work it. Play on the fear of white Americans and show them just how scared they should be of the impending minority takeover.

Statistics and facts be damned, white people have a right to fear for their future. Except they don’t.

According to another Pew Research study, “wealth inequality by race and ethnicity has grown since 2007.” The article shows that “[t]he wealth of white households was 13 times the median wealth of black households in 2013…”

Another fear is that minorities, specifically black Americans, receive preferential treatment because of race. Therefore white Americans are being forced to play from behind, especially in higher education.

It’s why Affirmative Action has been in conservative cross-hairs for years. I mean, a white woman by the name of Abigail Fisher, has turned into the face of the perils of Affirmative Action.

Except it isn’t for people like Abigail Fisher and her ilk.

Studies show that Affirmative Action helps white women more than anyone. The irony is rich in this one.

The Supreme Court heard Abigail’s case because she wasn’t admitted into The University of Texas at Austin, and she believes that it’s because of her skin color.

That encapsulates white privilege and fear at the same time.

Last myth buster is that there is a race war happening in America.

If so, black Americans continue to lose this battle. Another study shows that some white people own guns because they fear black violence. That same study goes on to state that people who have purchased guns for the impending race war are “more likely to kill themselves with those guns, than be killed by others or blacks.”

I could continue by noting how black people have legit reasons to operate fearfully just by breathing, but you should already know how that works. If the wealth inequality and dying middle-class didn’t do it for you, then your blinders are attached too tight.

Anyway, the middle-class is dying and so are black people. But white fear will likely end up destroying America, not what you purport to be afraid of.

There is a collection of wealth at the top of the economic ladder that should be concerning for everyone.

The Villages worst nightmare…no more nudes in Playboy

Playboy

How interesting that Playboy Magazine will stop including nude photos in its print editions.  In 1975 their circulation topped 5.6 Million. Now those numbers are down to 800,000. With the internet offering all manners of porn at the flick of a finger on a keyboard, magazine subscriptions are suffering. The demographics of those still receiving a monthly mag in their mail boxes is changing.

Most young people get their news from the internet, rather than having a newspaper in front of them. Magazines are falling by the wayside as readership is down, in favor of a tablet or smart phone. With a population of over 100,000 in The Villages, I’m wondering if a big chunk of Playboy’s subscriptions is being forwarded to my favorite residential bubble of old white men.

The Villages’ squirrelly reputation goes hand in hand, so to speak, with the magazines content. However, now they really will be reading the rag for the articles, not the pictorials…they’ll have no choice! I’ll bet a lot of old guys will be getting their grandkids to teach them how to use computers so they might access what they’ll be missing in their mail. AARP’s sales of their geriatric-friendly tablets will skyrocket!

Dianne Dorman

The Villages actually boasts a connection with a real Playboy model of the 70’s. Several years ago the Orlando Sentinel did an article about Dianne Dorman, who operated a clothing shop in The Villages. She said “Women in The Villages are free-spirited and young thinking, and they want their clothing to reflect that.”  Later Ms. Dorman left the aging mecca to open a boutique in Naples, FL, Di’s Dazzles. You can also find her story, Playboy, Celebrities and Me: In the Swingin’ 70’s on Amazon.com  Perhaps the women of Naples are more “free-spirited.”

One can only imagine the disappointment now that there is no chance of another nude centerfold in the mail…those old guys were probably holding out hope, dreaming that Sarah Palin would agree to a nude layout, complete with her Colt .45. Methinks Best Buy’s Geek Squad, of Lady Lake, will be busy next year!
