A new report by the Pew Research Center shows that the American middle class is slowly eroding.
The study shows that “the American middle class is now matched in number by those in the economic tiers above and below it.”
That’s not good.
Basically there are more rich and poor people combined than “middle-income households” in the United States.
Pew’s survey found that money moved from “middle-income to upper-income households,” which may be viewed as good economic news. But it also shows that the combined household incomes for middle-class Americans has dived from 62% in 1970 to just 43% in 2014.
Again–that’s not good.
It kind of gets better, and worse, for minorities. Black people have made economic gains but are still more likely to be poor and “less likely to be upper income than whites or adults overall.”
Rising tide lifts all boats, right?
But what sticks out for me is how a study of this nature taps into the faux fear that white people are losing ground financially and in everything else.
It’s a nauseating show of white privilege and here’s why: Donald Trump is leading the field of candidates for the Republican presidential nomination.
He’s found the sweet spot of American politics and he continues to work it. Play on the fear of white Americans and show them just how scared they should be of the impending minority takeover.
Statistics and facts be damned, white people have a right to fear for their future. Except they don’t.
According to another Pew Research study, “wealth inequality by race and ethnicity has grown since 2007.” The article shows that “[t]he wealth of white households was 13 times the median wealth of black households in 2013…”
Another fear is that minorities, specifically black Americans, receive preferential treatment because of race. Therefore white Americans are being forced to play from behind, especially in higher education.
It’s why Affirmative Action has been in conservative cross-hairs for years. I mean, a white woman by the name of Abigail Fisher, has turned into the face of the perils of Affirmative Action.
Except it isn’t for people like Abigail Fisher and her ilk.
Studies show that Affirmative Action helps white women more than anyone. The irony is rich in this one.
The Supreme Court heard Abigail’s case because she wasn’t admitted into The University of Texas at Austin, and she believes that it’s because of her skin color.
That encapsulates white privilege and fear at the same time.
Last myth buster is that there is a race war happening in America.
If so, black Americans continue to lose this battle. Another study shows that some white people own guns because they fear black violence. That same study goes on to state that people who have purchased guns for the impending race war are “more likely to kill themselves with those guns, than be killed by others or blacks.”
I could continue by noting how black people have legit reasons to operate fearfully just by breathing, but you should already know how that works. If the wealth inequality and dying middle-class didn’t do it for you, then your blinders are attached too tight.
Anyway, the middle-class is dying and so are black people. But white fear will likely end up destroying America, not what you purport to be afraid of.
There is a collection of wealth at the top of the economic ladder that should be concerning for everyone.
